Task Dependencies

Define relationships between tasks, control workflow sequence, and make blockers visible across your project.

3 min read

Task Dependencies allow you to establish relationships between tasks when one piece of work relies on another. By linking tasks together, your team can clearly understand what needs to be completed first and identify work that cannot move forward.

Dependencies are especially useful for coordinating work across multiple team members, teams, or project phases.

Dependency Types

TaskChecker supports two dependency relationships:

  • Blocked by - Indicates that the current task cannot proceed until the linked task is completed.
  • Blocks - Indicates that the current task must be completed before the linked task can proceed.

When you create a dependency, TaskChecker automatically creates the corresponding relationship on the linked task. This ensures that the dependency remains visible and consistent from both sides.

Visual Indicators

Dependencies are clearly represented throughout TaskChecker so your team can identify blockers at a glance.

  • Tasks with an unresolved Blocked by dependency display a lock icon on the task card.
  • In the Timeline view, dependency relationships appear as connecting arrows between task bars.

These visual indicators make it easier to identify bottlenecks and understand how work flows through the project.

Preventing Circular Dependencies

TaskChecker automatically prevents circular dependency chains.

For example, if Task A blocks Task B, you cannot create a second dependency that causes Task B to block Task A. Attempting to create a circular relationship triggers a warning, helping maintain a valid and manageable task structure.

Removing a Dependency

To remove an existing dependency, open either task's detail panel and navigate to Relationships.

Locate the dependency you want to remove and select the × icon. Removing the relationship updates both sides of the dependency automatically.

Keep Work Moving

Dependencies give your team a clear view of task relationships, helping you identify blockers early, sequence work effectively, and keep projects moving toward completion.

Dependencies provide guidance rather than hard restrictions. A blocked task can still be marked as Done when necessary, but TaskChecker flags the completion as out of order, helping your team identify when work was completed outside the defined dependency sequence.
