Backlog Management

Prioritise upcoming work, refine requirements, and keep your task backlog ready for the next sprint.

3 min read

The backlog is the central workspace for tasks that are not currently assigned to an active sprint. It provides your team with a prioritised list of potential work, making it easier to decide what to tackle next.

Prioritising Tasks

Organise tasks by priority using drag and drop. Move tasks up or down to reflect their importance and urgency. The order of tasks in the backlog helps your team determine which work should be considered first when planning the next sprint.

Grooming the Backlog

Regular backlog grooming keeps upcoming work relevant, clear, and actionable. As part of your regular review:

  • Remove outdated work Close or archive tasks that are no longer relevant.
  • Add context Include the necessary details, requirements, and acceptance criteria before estimating or starting work.
  • Break down large tasks Divide complex work into smaller, manageable tasks that can realistically fit within a sprint.
  • Organise related work Use tags, themes, or epics to make tasks easier to group, filter, and prioritise.

A well-maintained backlog reduces ambiguity and helps your team enter each sprint with a clear understanding of what needs to be delivered.

Moving Tasks into a Sprint

When a task is ready for delivery, add it to a sprint that is currently in the Planning stage.

Select the relevant tasks and choose Add to Sprint. To move multiple tasks at once, use Shift + Click to select a range of tasks.

Once added to the sprint, the tasks become part of the sprint's planned scope and can be estimated, prioritised, and tracked alongside the rest of the sprint work.

Keep Your Backlog Ready

A healthy backlog is more than a list of unfinished tasks. It is a structured, prioritised view of upcoming work that helps your team make better planning decisions and maintain a consistent delivery rhythm.

A healthy backlog should be reviewed and refined regularly. Consistent grooming keeps tasks relevant, actionable, and prioritised, preventing outdated work from accumulating over time.
